The process of psychotherapy and counselling involves addressing lots of different areas of a person’s functioning, such as physiological arousal (stress levels), movement and senses, attachment, emotion, and cognition. Throughout evolution, our brains have developed both primitive and advanced information processing systems that have different styles of perceiving things, and it does so at different speeds. This is partially what causes ‘inner conflict’ that everyone experiences to some extent because one circuit in the brain takes a quick snapshot of what is happening and looks for danger causing the first automatic feelings and thoughts to come up to be super general without context and negatively biased.
This means that the level of complexity of our brains makes us very susceptible to disregulation, dissociation, and errors in thinking and judgement. Although evolution selects adaptations based on survival, this is done only in the short-term view of survival to adapt to the present environment. It does not account for a future strategic plan of survival and adaptability. Working with a counsellor to help develop awareness and skills to counteract the way the brain initially processes information helps to solve such errors in thinking, lower stress, and see and experience life and relationships more clearly. This is an important part of therapy and being happier in general!
