Counselling for the emotional and relationship impacts of living with chronic pain, illness, injury or disability. Make space for what has changed and what matters to you now.

Living with changes you did not choose

Ongoing health concerns can change more than daily routines. They may affect work, relationships, independence, confidence and the way you see yourself. You might be managing uncertainty, explaining needs that other people do not readily understand or adjusting plans that once felt straightforward.

Counselling offers space to discuss the impact on your life without having to minimise it or put a positive interpretation on everything. You can explore feelings, changing roles and the support you need while considering choices that fit your circumstances and values.

Your pain and health concerns deserve to be taken seriously. Seeking emotional support does not mean that symptoms are imagined. Counselling complements healthcare; it does not replace medical assessment, treatment or rehabilitation.

What we can explore together

  • Worry or uncertainty about health, the future or changing abilities
  • Grief, frustration or anger about losses and limitations
  • Changes in work, identity, independence or a sense of direction
  • Feeling isolated, misunderstood or pressured to explain yourself
  • Asking for support and communicating needs in relationships
  • Harsh self-criticism, shame or pressure to keep doing what you did before

There is no requirement to have accepted everything that has happened before counselling begins. The conversation can start with the part of life that feels most difficult or with a small change you would like to work toward.

A place for both practical and emotional work

You and your counsellor can discuss how health changes are affecting your daily experience and relationships. Sessions may include making sense of emotional reactions, identifying familiar protective patterns or practising ways to communicate a need. You can also explore the expectations you place on yourself and how to respond when those expectations no longer fit.

For some people, the work includes reconnecting with meaningful parts of life in a different form. For others, it begins with acknowledging loss or having somewhere to speak openly. Your goals and pace can be reviewed as circumstances change; there is no fixed outcome or timeline.

HealthLink BC’s information on getting support with a chronic condition describes both emotional and practical support, including counselling to help with adjustment. Pain BC also provides information about community resources and support for people living with pain.

Meet Joel Meszaros

Joel Meszaros, Registered Clinical Counsellor, works with emotional and practical adjustments associated with chronic pain, injury, disability and illness. His profile describes a warm, collaborative approach that can combine practical skills with exploration of emotional and relationship patterns.

Joel also supports people navigating the demands of caregiving. Counselling for the person living with a condition and support for someone providing care have different starting points. A consultation can help clarify whose needs and goals a session would focus on.

Joel has completed an Emotionally Focused Couples Therapy (EFCT) externship.

Questions before you book

Is this a medical pain-management service?

No. This page describes counselling for emotional, practical and relationship concerns associated with living with a health condition. Continue working with appropriate healthcare professionals for medical questions, symptoms and treatment decisions.

Do I need a particular diagnosis?

You can begin by describing your experience and what support you are looking for. Ask the counsellor about the fit between their scope and your situation, including whether other services are also needed.

Choose the right person and format

Joel offers virtual counselling. Confirm clinician eligibility for the location where you will physically attend sessions. In-person appointments at Wellspring are offered by select counsellors at the Vancouver office. Check each profile for session formats.

A free 15-minute consultation is a short discussion of fit. Regular counselling sessions are separate, paid appointments. Review fees and policies and check benefits coverage for the individual clinician’s designation before booking.
